Displays and kiosks

Put Shop Floor boards, apps, dashboards and web pages on wall TVs, in a rotation you can control from your desk.

A display is a screen on the wall or at a kiosk: a smart TV's browser, a small PC behind a monitor, or a tablet. You register it once, pair the physical screen with a one-time token, and give it a rotation, which is the list of pages it cycles through. After that the screen runs unattended. It hides the pointer, recovers on its own after a network drop, and picks up rotation changes without anyone touching it.

Permissions: The Displays page, pairing, rotations and the remote control need DataMagik - Builder. The paired screen itself needs no login.

Register a display

  1. Open Setup menu → Displays (/shop-floor/settings/displays) and press + Add display.
  2. Enter a Name, for example "Line 3 wall board". The Slug (optional) is a short identifier for the display.
  3. Choose a Site. A display with a site only shows that plant's data. A display with No site is a company-wide wall.
  4. Press Register.

The top of the page counts your Displays, how many are Paired, and how many were Seen recently. Use the Display list to switch between them.

Pair the screen

  1. With the display selected, press Pair a screen. A token appears. It works once, expires in 60 minutes and is not shown again.
  2. On the TV itself, open your DataMagik web address followed by /kiosk.
  3. The screen shows Pair this screen. Type the token into Pairing token with the TV remote or a keyboard, and press Pair.

The display's status then moves from Not paired yet to Paired · has not checked in yet and on to Online. Pairing again replaces the screen the display runs on, which is how you move a display to new hardware or cut off one you no longer trust.

Build the rotation

Press Add an item for each page, then press Save rotation. The rotation is an ordered list, so use Move up and Move down to set the order. Each item has:

  • Kind, one of:
    • Shop-floor screen: any enabled board from the Screens registry, including screens you registered and, with Asset Health, the Asset Health screens.
    • Application: one of your App Designer applications.
    • Dashboard: one of your dashboards.
    • External web page: any https address. Many websites refuse to be embedded and will show as a blank panel. That is the website's own setting.
  • Shows: what to show, picked from a list rather than typed.
  • Show only: an optional filter, picked from your own sites, lines, workcenters, dashboards and maps. Each board offers only the filters it uses:
    • Floor Console: a site.
    • Pace Board: a line.
    • Hour by Hour: a workcenter.
    • Plant Overview: a dashboard and a map. Add every map as a page turns the item into one page per map, in the order the dashboard keeps them (or every map of the site), 30 seconds each.
    • Asset Health screens: a site. The Asset Health Lines screen also takes a line.
    • Live Board, Active Issues and Shift Handover take no filters. They show the whole site.
  • Seconds on screen: from 3 to 3600.
  • on: untick it to keep an item in the list without showing it.

Until you save, the editor shows Unsaved changes. The TV picks up a saved rotation within a minute.

If the rotation includes a Plant Overview page, PA alerts interrupt this display shows whether alerts can take over the screen. That setting belongs to the Plant Overview dashboard, so change it under Plant maps.

Runs as: showing applications and dashboards

Shop-floor screens and web pages need no identity. An application or a dashboard signs in as a person, so a display that shows one must be told who to Runs as. Choose an active user in Runs as, or — nobody — to clear it. A display that runs as nobody can show boards and web pages but not applications.

Choose carefully: the display can do anything that person can do in an application or dashboard, and every action it takes is recorded as theirs. A wall in a corridor has no lock and no operator. Use an account with only the access the screen needs.

Remote control

The Remote control panel shows what the selected display is showing right now and which page of the rotation it is on.

  • Previous and Next move one page.
  • Pause holds the current page, and Resume restarts the rotation.
  • Under Jump to, tap any page to go straight to it.

The TV follows within a few seconds. If the TV is not checking in, commands still go, and it follows them the next time it checks in.

Wall mode

Every board a display shows is drawn in wall mode: large type sized for reading at a distance, no filter controls, and no navigation. You can preview the same mode on any board with its Kiosk button.

What a display can and cannot do

  • A display is not a user. For shop-floor screens it holds read-only access to the pages in its rotation, for its own company and its own site. It cannot capture reasons, acknowledge alerts or change anything.
  • Applications and dashboards run as the Runs as user, with that person's access.
  • Press Remove to remove a display. The screen showing it can no longer authenticate.

When a display goes dark

A display that stops checking in is marked Dark · last seen time. Check its power and network. It resumes its rotation on its own when it comes back. If the screen reads This display is no longer paired, it was removed or paired elsewhere, so pair it again from Displays. For more fixes, see Troubleshooting.
